How many hairs do I need?

The factors involved in designing a natural hairline are aesthetically challenging, with many considerations coming into play:

extent of the thinning

Age of the patient

Medication the patient is taking

quality of the donor hair

any further genetic thinning possible

density required to achieve a natural look

Patient expectations.

It’s a numbers game.

The average patient has approx. 10,000 hairs available to do hair transplant in their lifetime (safe extraction number to achieve good results with minimal damage), this is a very limited amount of hair, but even at only 10,000, if done correctly is still enough to recreate a nice head of hair. The main thing you must never do, is over commit to using all you donor to rebuild only one area of your scalp.

Case of over harvesting

CASE #1

Motorised FUE

Extensive scar tissue

Patches of extreme thinning

8000 hairs extracted

3000 approx. growing

Donor area exhausted

Chance of correction NIL

When deciding how many hairs we will use to rebuild a crown or frontal hair line, we must only take what is essential, to recreate a strong density, natural correction. While keeping hairs in reserve for future use if ever needed.

Sadly this is not always the global trend. A lot of people are wanting maximum extraction and taking more hairs than what they need. The scariest part of this, any unused hairs, due to over extraction, are thrown out, never to regrow. Leading to extensive permanent damage your donor, preventing the possibility of secondary sessions if ever required and visible scar tissue.

Case of over harvesting

CASE #2

Uneven extraction, focused heavily one in area
